Create accents for your space, simple pleasures and gifts. Calming and meditative DIY for your home, whether it's indoors or outdoors ....

1. Cabana Glamour: Who doesn't love a gorgeous garden tent? This one is particularly appealing, with striped fabric and soft lighting to set a seductive mood. Smooth pebbles serve as seamless transation from patio to pool.

2. Lantern Love: Something about a brightly colored paper lantern instantly telegraphs a festive mood. Here, pillows in leafy prints echo the verdant landscape.

3. Fireside Chat: A modern fire-pit and four streamlined outdoor armchairs look pared-down and graphic against the gravel landscaping and brick wall.

4. Animal Attraction: Paired with French doors and classic wicker furniture, a bold zebra-striped rug creates an immediate connection between indoors and out.

5. Minimalist Moroccan: Low daybeds and an intricate coffee table invite all-day lounging, while the pale palette gives the exotic surroundings an unexpected twist.

6. Playhouse Perch: The childhood fort of your dreams takes pride of place in this charming backyard nook, with a dash of yellow to break up the dominant blue-green and olive hues.

7. Souk Style: Striped fabric reminiscent of the seaside complements the thatched sunshade; red stools around traditional Moroccan tea tables make this feel like a sheltered spot in the midst of a medina.

8. Straight and Narrow: A Mediterranean-inspired gravel leads past brick-bordered beds to an alfresco table, creating a sense of journey within the garden.

9. Star Power: In this poolside vignette, a formal chandelier takes center stage, adding an unabashedly touch worthy of a Hollywood starlet.

10. Pretty in Pastels: Powder-blue stripes and petal-pink fabric are grounded by the striking artwork and sea-grass rug. Note the bejeweled whippet in the corner standing guard over the proceedings.

With the inside drum of a washing machine you too can make the perfect fire pit for your backyard ....

Materials:

  • 1 Recycled Washing Machine Drum (we got ours at a used appliance store for $10)
  • Angle grinder (optional)
  • Cup wire brush, Cut-off wheel, and Flap-wheel sanding disc (for grinder, also optional)
  • Safety Glasses
  • Angle-stock Flat-stock steel (optional)
  • High heat black paint (optional)

Step 1: Strip the drum. Remove all plastic bits including plastic (right) and plastic base (left). Clean off any gunk.

Step 2: Remove center spindle. This is optional.

Step 3: Cut off metal lip. Again, this is optional but makes the top look a little more clean.

Detail of removing the top lip. It's pretty rough when you take it off but then you can grind it down with the flapper-wheel.

Step 4: Smooth out the top lip, any metal burrs, or jagged edges.

Step 5: The wire brush made quick work of removing years of soap scum.

Step 6: Joe fabricated some steel legs and welded them to the base so it was off the ground just a bit. This is also optional. Those little square tabs were added so it doesn't sink in the ground.

Step 7: Paint your fire pit. Be sure to use high-heat paint. We chose black matte but something bright would be fun.

These lights were inspired by all the beautiful blooms I've been seeing around town. I wanted to bring the summer indoors, but they could make for some colorful outdoor lighting too.

Making these floral garlands couldn't be faster - all you need are cupcake papers (large and small), string lights, scissors, and an exacto knife ....

Step 1: To make leaves - fold small cupcake paper in half 2 times, and with the folded point at the bottom cut a leaf shape.

Step 2: To make an 8-petal flower - fold a small cupcake paper in half 3 times, and with the folded point at the bottom cut around the top.

Step 3: To make a 16-petal flower - fold a large cupcake paper in half 4 times, and with the folded point at the bottom cut around the top.

Step 4: Cut a small X in the center of each paper.

Step 5: Layer cupcake papers onto each lightbulb to make flowers.
