Dandruff may be the result of a dry scalp, or a skin condition called seborrheic dermatitis. It could also be caused by eczema, psoriasis, or, very commonly, an overgrowth of a yeastlike fungus called malassezia. If you want to treat dandruff naturally, here are 11 remedies to try ....

Aspirin

Aspirin contains the same active ingredients (salicylic acid) as many medicated dandruff shampoos. Keep flaking in check by crushing two aspirins to a fine powder and adding it to the normal amount of shampoo you use each time you wash your hair. Leave the mixture on your hair for 1-2 minutes, then rinse well and wash again with plain shampoo.

Tea tree oil

One study showed that shampoos with just 5% tea tree oil significantly improves the severity of dandruff. You can also add a few drops of tea tree oil to your favorite shampoo as you wash normally.

Baking soda

Your kitchen could hold the key to an itch-free, flake-free scalp. Wet your hair and then rub a handful of baking soda vigorously into your scalp. Skip the shampoo and go right to rinsing. Baking soda reduces overactive fungi that can cause dandruff. Your hair may get dried out at first, but after a few weeks your scalp will start producing natural oils, leaving your hair softer and free of flakes.

Apple cider vinegar

Dr. Mehmet Oz swears by apple cider vinegar as a dandruff treatment, as the acidity of apple cider vinegar changes the pH of your scalp, making it harder for yeast to grow. Mix a quarter cup apple cider vinegar with a quarter cup water in spray bottle and spritz on your scalp. Wrap your had in a towel and let sit for 15 minutes to an hour, then wash your hair as usual. Do this twice a week.

Mouthwash

To treat a bad case of dandruff, wash your hair with your regular shampoo, then rinse with an alcohol-based mouthwash. Follow with your regular conditioner. Mouthwash's anti-fungal properties help prevent dandruff-causing yeast from growing.

Coconut oil

Coconut oil is a ''tried and true'' dandruff treatment, and it smells nice too. Before showering, massage 3-5 tablespoons of coconut oil into your scalp and let sit for about an hour. Shampoo normally. You can also look for a shampoo that already contains coconut oil.

Lemon

Dandruff relief may be no farther away than your refrigerator. Just massage 2 tablespoon lemon juice into your scalp and rinse with water. Then stir 1 teaspoon lemon juice into 1 cup water and rinse your hair with it. Repeat this daily until your dandruff disappears. Lemon's acidity helps balance the pH of your scalp, which helps keeps dandruff at bay.

Salt

The abrasiveness of ordinary table salt works great for scrubbing out dandruff flakes before you shampoo. Grab a saltshaker and shake some salt onto your dry scalp. Then work it through your hair, giving your scalp a massage. You'll find you've worked out the dry, flaky skin and are ready for a shampoo.

Aloe vera

Stop yourself from scratching by massaging aloe vera into your scalp before shampooing. The cooling effects of aloe vera will soothe the itch.

Garlic

Garlic's anti-fungal properties are perfect for eliminating dandruff-causing bacteria. Crush garlic and rub it into your scalp. To avoid that potent smell, lealwithfood.org suggests mixing crushed garlic with honey and massaging into the scalp before washing as usual.

Olive oil

An overnight olive oil soak is a folk remedy for dandruff. Massage about 10 drops into your scalp and cover with a shower cap overnight. Follow your regular shampoo routine in the morning. For a quicker cure, look for a shampoo that contains olive oil.

To create:
  1. Cut a rectangular piece of leather (or leather like) fabric to the approximate size of your barrette.
  2. Glue the backside of the fabric piece to your barrette with extra-strength glue (we used E6000). To avoid excess glue and drips, use a craft stick.
  3. Finish by embellishing with an array of quartz and crystals.
  4. Let dry completely, then style for an instant eye-catcher.

We can't be alone in our collective history of Sun-In horror stories, (orange, so much orange). But while lemon juice has long since been touted as the better, at-home, all-natural alternative, it too has caveat of its own: used in excess and high concentration, it can really dry out your strands (blame the acidity). Fortunately, we put together a little cocktail that will still help summon the highlights you crave ....

Ingredients

  • 3 large lemons
  • 2 bags of chamomile tea
  • 1 tsp of ground cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp almond oil or coconut oil
  • an empty spray bottle

Method

Step 1: Boil about 1 cup of water and add the tea bags. Set aside to steep for a few minutes.

Step 2: Squeeze those lemons. You should get about 1/3 of juice. Add to the spray bottle, straining out any errant seeds.

Step 3: Measure out the cinnamon and almond oil and add to the spray bottle, along with the brewed tea (sans tea bags, of course). Seal the bottle shut, and shake it like a Polaroid picture.

Step 4: Spray the areas of your hair you'd like to lighten. (We wanted our blonde tips a little bit blonder). Then, take this excuse to bask in the sunlight (with sunscreen, please!)-the rays will lighten your strands up.

Create a simple lemon coconut shampoo. All you need is three ingredients: Organic Shampoo Base, organic coconut oil, and lemon essential oil (or if lemon isn't your favorite, you can check out other essential oil alternatives) ....

Step 1: First, measure out your shampoo base. I poured one cup of base into a bowl, which was all I needed to fill a small 8 oz. mason jar. The base is a translucent pale yellow color and has a neutral smell perfect for adding your own fragrance.

Step 2: Add about 1 tablespoon of organic coconut oil, which is excellent for nourishing your hair and scalp.

Step 3: Stir in the coconut oil slowly. I love the look of the swirls. Mix your coconut oil; if your base turns opaque as pictured above, that's not a problem. In fact, I love the color the coconut oil gives.

Step 4: Lastly, add your fragrance of choice. I added about 20 drops of lemon essential oil (you can add more or less, as preferred) to give it a fresh citrus scent.

When you're done, pour your newly created shampoo into a mason jar, tie a cute twine bow around it (because let's face it-everything is better with twine), and voila!
